How to connect a screen

Fifteen minutes, ten of which is unpacking the box and plugging it into the TV.

What you need

A TV with a free HDMI input. Any TV will do, it doesn’t have to be smart.

A set-top box with Android TV 9 or newer. Tested on Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd generation.

Internet at the venue — Wi-Fi or cable. Without it the screen will only show a connection-lost message.

The venue’s first screen

This is how a venue we don’t have yet gets connected. You will need a phone — you scan the code with it and create the account.

Connect the box

Plug it into HDMI, turn on the TV and select that input. Connect the box to the internet.

Install the app

You need a browser, and a new box usually has none. The steps are below; if a browser is already there, start with the second list.

If there is no browser

On the home screen pick the gear — Quick Settings — and press OK.
Pick All settings and press OK.
Open Apps.
Pick Add more apps.
Go down to Search for apps and games and press OK.
Type the name of a browser — for example, “Yandex Browser” or “Internet Browser” — and press Search.
Pick the browser in the results and press Install, then Open once it is installed.

Installing the app

Type qrekran.ru/tv in the browser’s address bar and open the page.
On that page find the “Download and install” button and press it — the browser downloads the app.
The browser shows the downloaded file AdScreen.apk — pick it.
The first time, the TV will not install the app and opens the Install unknown apps screen; if a warning comes first, press Settings in it. Find your browser in the list and switch it on: Not allowed should turn into Allowed.
Press Back on the remote, pick AdScreen.apk again and press Install. If the app was already there, the button says Update.
Press Open — the pairing code appears on the screen.

Menu names differ a little between makers: the steps are shown on a Xiaomi TV Box S and Google TV sets. The browser is allowed once — app updates will not need this step again.

Scan the code on the screen

A binding code appears on the TV. Point your phone camera at it. The code changes every minute, so you can’t photograph it for later — that is the protection: the screen goes to the person standing in front of it.

Fill in the form

Venue name, address, phone number and password. The phone number is your login: you sign in to the account with it and attach further screens with it.

Add your own frames

The screen is yours. In the account add your menu, posters, opening hours — they will play in a loop until guests post something.

Another screen in the same venue

If you already have an account, you don’t need a second one: the new screen attaches to the same phone number and password, and all the accounting stays shared.

Box and app — the same way

The first two steps are the same: HDMI, internet, qrekran.ru/tv.

Sign in with your phone number

Scan the code on the screen and enter the same phone number in the form. You will then be asked for your existing password, not a new one, and the screen joins your account.

Name where it stands

Location and placement — “Novy Arbat 10”, “main hall”. When there are several screens, that is the only way to tell which one is in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

What if the internet goes down?

The screen shows a message and reconnects by itself. As soon as the connection is back, it turns on without you.

Who is responsible for what guests post?

Ads are checked before they are shown, and everything shown goes into the screen log with time and text. An ad can be removed from the screen with one press of the remote.

Can I have a screen without guest ads?

Yes. Then the screen shows only your rotation. Terms for this mode are discussed separately.

What happens to the box if we decide to stop?

The box is yours. The app closes with a long press of Back, and the TV works as usual.
